Whats on the bench – P-51 Mustang

My build is a Top Flite Gold Series Scale P-51 Mustang kit.

This was to be my “Retirement Project” however being “Home Bound” it is an ideal time to start the project. My heart is skipping a beat when I think of the maiden flight already.

I think this must be one of the last ones sold as I believe that they are no longer in production.

With this model, I plan to replicate Chuck Yeagers WWII Mustang.

I have also purchased a cockpit kit and pilot from iflytailies.com and also bought a Chuck Yeager Decal kit from Caligraphics.

The plan is to power the plane with a OS GT55.

I have also purchased the retractable tail wheel and main gear.

Update 1:

Steps so far. – Bought a 1200 X 2400 X 16mm sheet of craft wood. Laid out the plans and covered with plastic.

Built the stabiliser and elevator.  Lots of big blocks of balsa. Much use of a block plane,  orbital sander and hand sander.

Used blocks of metal on bags of bran as weights to hold bits in place.

As I will be using pin hinges, I used 1.6mm diameter brazing rods to align the surfaces for sanding.

Update 2:

Most of the control surfaces are taking shape, the fuselage is coming along nicely and so are the wings

Update 3:

Turned down some hexagonal stock to 5mm diameter and drilled out to 2.5mm. Silver soldered wood screw offcuts in the end ready to screw into the gun ports. Started the process of making rivet lines on the wing.

Update 4:

Another days work and I have completed the rivet lines in the wing

Commenced assembling the cockpit.

After a few cold weeks of not wanting to venture into the shed, I finally completed another task, fitting the undercarriage and the engine.

So next up was the Cockpit detailing, which is coming along well.
